SUMMARY:Letters & Scissors & Paste\, Oh My! - Wednesdays in April
DESCRIPTION:Letters and Scissors and Paste\, Oh My!\n                                                                                                 with Mike Gold                                                                                                   Member Sponsored Workshop \nThis workshop series with Mike Gold focuses less on pen and ink and more on cutting and pasting. So\, if you want to try something different\, this might be just the thing for you as we focus on building cut paper and collage lettering-based compositions. \nWe will look at some of the principles and ideas that guided Picasso\, Matisse and others to create contemporary calligraphic art. Collage was key to both Picasso and Matisse in developing their work and modernist visual vocabulary and we will use it here\, too. The work of master calligraphers Hans-Joachim Burgert and Myrlin von Glahn will be also be examined and used as inspiration. Each of the exercises will explore non-traditional layout and design using letters as shapes\, textures and design elements. Demonstrations and handouts will guide you through the work. \nYou will come away with:\n– Four artworks that feature cut paper and collage (two of each).\n– A better understanding of composition\, layout and design.\n– Knowledge of the supplies\, tools and methods for creating letter-based cut paper and collage designs.\n– Handouts that provide images and text that will provide reference post-workshop. \nCost \n$150 Early-Bird price by 3/23 with the coupon code FUNNYGUY \n$175 after 3/23 \nSession Recordings and Materials\nAll sessions will be recorded and stored on the www.LetsLetterTogether.com platform. You can access recordings\, supply lists\, and bonus materials within your Library after you register through April 2023. \nLive Sessions\nFour instructional sessions:\nWednesdays\, April 6\, 13\, 20 & 27\, Noon–2pm MDT \nBonus Live Sessions! Student reviews:\nMonday\, April 18 & Monday\, May 2\, 5:00–6:00pm MDT \nRegister \nhttps://www.letslettertogether.com/offers/hCyMoUmp?coupon_code=FUNNYGUY \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Tiny Books & Boxes Review
DESCRIPTION:The weather on Saturday\, September 11 was sunny and perfect (except for the heavy traffic caused by the CU/Texas A&M game) for our first in-person program since the world shut down. We met at Margaret Stookesberry’s\, outside on the patio. \n You probably already know that Margaret is the Master of Folded-Paper Projects. This one was based on a workshop with Carol Pallesen at Ghost Ranch. Margaret had all the materials precisely pre-cut and the directions printed out. \n Even with the directions\, we needed Margaret to guide us through the steps so that we ended up with a neat mini box and lid\, folded to hold together with no glue needed. Margaret suggested that this is a good use for old calendars and other saved decorated papers. The box can be made in any size\, as long as you start with a square piece of paper. Once you learn the system\, you can easily become addicted to folding boxes. \n To go into our clever little box\, we made a mini book\, with a brass hinge and leather cover. For the pages inside\, we learned a good method for accordion-folding a strip of paper. \n Finally Margaret shared the “Clothesline Alphabet” style\, which she used for our name tags. Basically\, you write mono-line capitals and then connect the top and bottom of the letters. To finish\, you color the spaces between letters with watercolor pencils which you can then blend with a wet brush. This ‘clothesline alphabet’ is handy for casual-but-interesting lettering. \n We all enjoyed getting together and learning something new. \n Report by Alison Richards \n\n
