SUMMARY:January 14 Program - Modified Neuland presented by Carrie Imai
DESCRIPTION:Modified Neuland\nPresented by Carrie Imai\nWednesday\, January 14\, 2026\n6:30pm MT on Zoom\n \nMembers: free\, Non-members: $10\nMembers need not register. Non-members please register below. A zoom link will be sent to current members and program registrants a few days before the program. This program will be recorded for future viewing. Please contact Jenny Allen with questions at ccgprograms@coloradocalligraphers.com. \nProgram Description\nThis modified Neuland alphabet\, based on Rudolf Koch’s designed typeface\, is a wonderful addition to your calligraphic repertoire. It is an easy-to-learn\, remarkably useable and adaptable modern hand which is a great start for newbies to calligraphy and the manipulated Neuland will be a challenge for those more experienced. Besides learning two styles of Neuland and the Cuneiform alphabets\, we will be experimenting with many new tools for writing\, including wood veneer\, cardboard and dental tools\, which will free us up and allow us to create magical results from gossamer\, transparent letters to bold\, powerful ones. As this alphabet consists of only majuscule letters\, it can be learned quickly\, which will leave lots of time for discovering its many variations and applications and learning my sweet “Carrioka” hand\, which will introduce you to pen manipulation.  \nAbout Carrie\nCarrie has been teaching calligraphy and related subjects for over 35 years. Following completion of a certificate program in graphic art and design she started a free-lance calligraphy and graphic arts business\, and has worked as a calligrapher for the County of Los Angeles. She has taught at many international calligraphy conferences\, UCLA Extension\, Brandes Art Institute\, Hughes Aircraft\, RAND Corporation\, and guilds across the US\, Canada and in Finland. She is past President of the Society for Calligraphy\, Los Angeles and has been the Director of the Letters California Style conference for 15 years. She has published a book entitled “Dancin’ Pen” which is in libraries across the world. \nAll these ventures have brought her joy. But in her words\, “What really turns me on is seeing the light go on in a student’s eyes. Life is good.”  \nYou can view Carrie’s website at www.carriedesigns.com.

SUMMARY:November 12 Program - By Hand presented by Tim Brookes
DESCRIPTION:By Hand: The Art of Writing and the Future of the Written Word\nPresented by Tim Brookes\nWednesday\, November 12\, 2025\n6:30pm MST on Zoom\n \nAbove\n1. Calligraphy in the Kulitan script for the Kapampangan language of the Philippines\, originally incised in bamboo.\n2. That’s me\, holding up a carving I’ve just finished in classical Mongolian script. It translates as “Mongolia my heart.”\n3. Esther Mahlangu\, an artist in the southern African Litema style\, whose designs have been commissioned for a BMW concept car and a British Airways jumbo jet. This style of artwork was the inspiration for a new script for Bantu languages.\n4. This says “Laan tulis” or “Write!” In Balinese (and the wood\, for those who tried guessing\, is goncalo alves).\n5. An extraordinary thing\, almost unthinkable yet fascinating: a newspaper written by hand\, in Urdu\, in the Nastaliq script.\n\nMembers: free\, Non-members: $10\nMembers need not register. Non-members please register on our website below. A zoom link will be sent to current members and program registrants a few days before the program. This program will be recorded for future viewing. Please contact Jenny Allen with questions at ccgprograms@coloradocalligraphers.com. \nProgram Description\nLate in 2024\, writer/woodcarver/former NPR essayist Tim Brookes\, author of the new book By Hand\, made a strange and dismaying discovery. As the founder of the Endangered Alphabets Project\, he was well aware that some cultures around the world are reviving their traditional forms of writing\, and thereby supporting their sense of culture and identity\, by teaching calligraphy. But at the same time\, in the United States in particular\, the so-called First World is abandoning handwriting in favor of the keyboard—but at what cost? And is this connected to the fact that a startling number of people are now ashamed of their own handwriting? \nConsulting neuroscientists\, graffiti and tattoo artists\, calligraphers\, even ink specialists\, he took a deeper dive into the nature and value of handwriting than any other writer\, even to the point of writing most of the book by hand in violet-blackberry-colored ink in a series of journals with his new calligraphy pen—and in the process discovered astonishing evidence of the value of keeping a journal. His talk will address some of the discoveries he made while writing By Hand by hand\, and will ask the question “What is the calligrapher’s place in this time of change and turmoil?” \nAbout Tim\nTim Brookes has absolutely no background in calligraphy. Nor\, for that matter\, in art or woodwork or linguistics. He is living proof that it is never too late to discover your life’s work. \nHe was educated at Oxford and has lived in the US since 1980\, during which time he has been a writer\, editor\, guitarist\, soccer coach and\, most recently\, wood carver and founder of the Endangered Alphabets Project. His work advocating for minority scripts from around the world has led to appearances at the Smithsonian\, the Library of Congress\, and colleges and universities around the world. \nHis latest book\, By Hand (due out in November) promotes the role of calligraphy as a means of uniting a culture with its history\, traditions and identity\, and argues for the importance of handwriting in the Age of AI. \nCheck out his new books An Atlas of Endangered Alphabets and Writing Beyond Writing on Amazon: The Endangered Alphabets Project www.endangeredalphabets.com and The Atlas of Endangered Alphabets at www.endangeredalphabets.net \nTwitter: @EAlphabets \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1190077011746159 \nInstagram: @EndangeredAlphas

Please note that registration is non-refundable unless your spot can be filled from the waiting list or a substitute provided by the enrollee. For a list of workshop policies\, go to https://www.coloradocalligraphers.com/about-2/policies/. Please contact Ann Hiemstra with questions at president@coloradocalligraphers.com. \n\n\n\nThis is an online Zoom class with full interaction with the instructor during class time. The supply list is attached below and handouts will be sent prior to the first class. The zoom link will be sent a few days before the start of the workshop. This workshop will be recorded and available to view for two months until December 5\, 2025. \nWorkshop Description\nThese drawn and painted letters are sure to delight every calligrapher\, from beginner to advanced. \nStudents will be led through a series of exercises that will help them create their own unusual letterforms. The letters will be drawn within a 3” x 3” format—which helps the student see both the positive and negative space of each letter\, and thus helps with understanding how the letter is formed. \n\n\n\nA variety of mediums will be used to create our little “jeweled” letters. Media will include gesso and masking fluid resist\, gouache\, watercolor\, metallic watercolors and dry pigments\, paint pens\, etc. We will also work on both white and black papers to achieve different effects. \nAbout Julie\nJulie Wildman is a professional graphic designer\, lettering artist and instructor. Her studio is in northwest Indiana\, only 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. \nHer calligraphic interest began in the late ‘80s after a friend gave her Timothy Botts’ book “Doorposts\,” and she saw the written word illustrated in such a way as never before. About ten years later\, she had the privilege of taking a year-long class with an internationally known calligrapher and was hooked. She joined the Chicago Calligraphy Collective soon after and embarked on a lifelong journey of studying letters. \nSince then\, her work has been exhibited in juried shows throughout the Midwest and the U.S.\, including the Newberry Library in Chicago. \nIn 2007 and 2014\, her pieces “Psalm 117” and “An Alphabet Book\,” respectively\, won the Newberry’s Purchase Prize Award and became a part of the Library’s permanent collection. Her work has also been published in many issues of Letter Arts Review\, Bound & Lettered\, and various other type and lettering publications. Two of her more recent works\, “Merton Quote” and “Psalm 97:1\,” have been purchased by the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) and a private donor for the Harrison Collection at the SFPL. \nShe loves line\, shape\, color\, texture\, paper\, ink\, and paint and often can’t believe she gets to play with them for a living! She enthusiastically shares her love of “beautiful writing” with young and old by teaching calligraphy for staff development classes\, on-site promotional events\, community programs and personal growth workshops throughout the Chicagoland area\, U.S.\, and Canada. And now with Zoom classes\, she has taught students from more than 22 countries around the world. \nFor a complete curriculum vitae and to see more of her work\, please visit her website at wildmandesigns.com \n\n\n\nE: julie@wildmandesigns.com\nIG: juliewildmandesigns\nFB: wildmandesigns\n\nEveryLetterJewel-SupplyList

SUMMARY:April 26/27 Workshop - Cascading Capitals with Suzie Beringer

Please note that registration is non-refundable unless your spot can be filled from the waiting list or a substitute provided by the enrollee. For a list of workshop policies\, go to https://www.coloradocalligraphers.com/about-2/policies/. We will have a half hour break for lunch and two 15 minute breaks. The supply list and handouts will be sent later after you sign up. The zoom link will be sent a few days before the start of the workshop. This workshop will be recorded and available to view for two months. \nWorkshop Description\nCreating tiny delicate Roman Capitals and allowing their placement to become a major part of the design is the focus of this workshop. \nFirst let’s look at mono-line Roman Capitals – working through their basic shapes and proportions. Next we will dress them up with delicate serifs and last\, but not least\, creating lovely waisted strokes. As we begin using the pointed pen\, we will talk about scaling down our letterforms as we breathe life into them. \nWith a series of carefully planned exercises we will take these capitals on a ride by taking off their training wheels (guidelines)…and letting them fly! By carefully thinking about the axis of each letterform you will create a visual texture of cascading\, trickling and thoughtful scattering of letters. These will be based off your design. We will also use color and mica in our lettering designs. At the end of this workshop you will walk away with a great resource booklet that will record all of your ideas and notes.  \nAbout Suzie\nSuzie Beringer is a lettering artist who makes her home in the Pacific Northwest. With a degree in commercial art with a life-time passion for calligraphy and mark making\, she is constantly exploring new possibilities and pushing herself creatively. Her work has been published in Letter Arts Review as well as other publications. As a teacher she loves to share her passion for mark making and design with others. As an artist\, Suzie loves the challenge and discovery that lettering on different surfaces brings. It has been said\, that if something around her doesn’t move quickly enough it may end up with letters on it! \nYou can see more of her work on Instagram: @penstrokedesignstudio or visit www.penstrokedesign.com

SUMMARY:March 12 Program - Women of the Klingspor Presentation with Louise Grunewald
DESCRIPTION:Women of the Klingspor\nPresented by Louise Grunewald\nWednesday\, March 12\, 2025\n6:30-8pm MST on Zoom\n \nMembers: free\, Non-members: $10\nMembers need not register. Non-members please register below. A zoom link will be sent to current members and program registrants a few days before the program. This program will be recorded for future viewing until April 30\, 2025. Please contact Jenny Allen with questions at ccgprograms@coloradocalligraphers.com. \nProgram Description\nTo visit the Klingspor Museum of Book and Letter Arts in Offenbach Germany is a calligrapher’s dream. The collection encompasses some of the finest lettering / calligraphy examples from around the world\, as well as hand-bound and hand-lettered books. I have been fortunate to visit many times and have never been disappointed. Many of the examples are the works of well-known men in the field\, but on my last trip\, along with my colleague Andrea Wunderlich\, we requested specifically to see work by female artists. These women\, mostly from the early 20th Century\, were successful in their own right but not as well-known\, which is often the case of women the arts. It is their work that I will showcase in my presentation\, from traditional and formal to experimental and ahead of its time.  \nAbout Louise\nLouise Grunewald is a visual artist working in the disciplines of drawing\, painting\, hand lettering\, printmaking\, and book design. She operates her studio\, Western Hands\, in Durango\, Colorado. The subject matter of her art and writing is largely inspired by time spent outdoors in the natural world and traveling to new environments with her sketchbook in hand. Louise’s work can be seen in many private and public collections in the United States and internationally. Special collections include the Portland Art Museum\, the New Mexico History Museum\, the University of Arizona\, Bowdoin College\, San Francisco Public Library\, and the Klingspor Museum of Book and Letter Arts in Offenbach Germany. \nwww.louisegrunewald.com

This workshop will be recorded and available to view for one month until February 11\, 2025. \nWorkshop Description\nSolomon’s knot (aka ‘Solomon’s seal) is a traditional decorative motif used since ancient times and found in many cultures; mosaic floors in Italy\, stone mosaics in ancient synagogues\, mosques in Cairo\, African beadwork in crowns and masks\, Central Asian prayer rugs\, leaded glass windows in Moorish Spain\, and now in Colorado! \nThe Solomon knot we are painting is from a manuscript written during the Golden Age of Spain when Spain was conquered by the Moors. The artistic Islamic influence has unique and interesting decorative elements that gracefully provide us with additional painting opportunities. \nI’ll be painting along with you\, step by step. My document camera will be way down low so you can see me demonstrating Chiaroscuro. It’s the classic painting technique of seamlessly shading and blending made popular in the Renaissance by my boyfriend Leonardo Di Vinci. \nAbout Risa\nRisa Gettler combines her lifelong study of letters with medieval manuscript arts. Extended studies: the University of Calligraphy/Italy\, Barcelona School of Design/Spain\, Princeton University/Department of Spanish Medieval Art\, Getty Center\, and UCLA/Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. A guest on radio and TV. Art projects: the LA City Marathon\, the National Council on Aging\, the International Council on Alzheimer’s Disease/Toronto\, and a CD design of medieval Spanish music funded by The National Endowment of the Arts. Art included in the Smithsonian\, Washington National Cathedral\, calligraphy and calligraphy related books\, calendars\, exhibits\, galleries and international art publications. Teaching for international conferences\, guilds\, universities and museums since the 1990’s. Her work can be found in several anthologies and Risa’s work is represented in the Harrison Collection of Calligraphy and Lettering. Risa’s forthcoming book\, Animating the Alphabet\, is available in 2024. Risa’s most notable client is His Holiness Pope John Paul\, II. \n \n\nSolomon’s Seal from an 8th century Spanish manuscript

This workshop will be recorded for future access by participants. \n\nWorkshop Description\nAmongst our lettering art endeavours\, we have the opportunity to express words we choose and add multiple dimensions to that expression. Whether it is abstract or a simple design a tiny thread of text can create contrast and visual impact. During this class I will demonstrate how to write in “threads”\, a very loose tiny style of text which can tie elements of a piece together. These threads can be a “whisper” in a piece\, reflecting the theme or be an added design element. \nSession One: We will focus on creating the thread writing working both in pencil and ink. We will focus on the individual elements that are the basis of this style and how to create a rhythmic and expressive line. We will then create some abstract marks with ink. I will show some options for backgrounds on to which text will be added. Students will determine what words they would like to work with. \nSession Two: We will begin with creating some backgrounds and/or a single design element around which we will add text. Students will choose text they wish to add to the pages and then determine what kind of background or image will be the inspiration based on the text. I will demonstrate techniques that could be used. \nSession Three: We will begin the session by combining the “thread” writing with the chosen text\, and then find ways to create visual contrast and interest ensuring that the process enhances the final design. The goal is to have these additional threads of text be the elements that bring an additional “bit” that can bring life to the words. \nAbout Connie\nConnie Furgason was raised on a farm in Southern Alberta where her love of nature and the vastness of the prairie is expressed in her work. Her mother was an accomplished artist\, gardener and creative soul. \nShe grew up with the scent of turpentine as her mother painted long into the night after she and her three brothers were asleep. Those influences sent Connie in many artistic directions. She started teaching calligraphy and related arts in 1982. Connie travels across Canada and the US teaching for guilds\, private studios and has been part of the faculty at several international lettering arts conferences. \nConnie loves the written word and uses her own text in her work expressing it through a variety of different mediums including watercolour\, acrylic and mixed media. Her work has been published by art distribution companies and her originals have found many lovely new homes in Canada and the US. \nShe loves sharing a variety of art techniques with students of all levels and seeing the joy experienced as they discover their own artist within. Connie loves the prairie\, the mountains\, the ocean and especially the gift of her four children and four grandchildren. Currently\, she lives in Lethbridge\, Alberta Canada\, just 45 minutes from the Rocky Mountains\, with her husband Kevin (another creative soul). \n“Find joy daily in the simple offerings….in the splendour of nature\, cherished moments with family and friends and the enchanted pathways waiting to be discovered as art exploration expands our view of what lies at our feet.”  Words by Connie

During her workshop in October\, she will demonstrate how to write in “threads”\, a very loose tiny style of text which can tie elements of a piece together. These threads can be a “whisper” in a piece\, reflecting the theme or be an added design element. Connie loves the prairie\, the mountains\, the ocean and especially the gift of her four children and 4 grandchildren.

SUMMARY:April 10 Program - Ligatures: Kissing and Cuddling with Risa Gettler
DESCRIPTION:Ligatures: Kissing and Cuddling\nPresented by Risa Gettler\nWednesday\, April 10\, 2024\n6:30-8pm MDT on Zoom\n  \n\nMembers: free\, Non-members: $10\nMembers need not register. Non-members please register below. A zoom link will be sent to current members and program registrants a few days before the program. This program will be recorded for future viewing. Please contact Jenny Allen with questions at ccgprograms@coloradocalligraphers.com.  \nProgram Description\nStarting with what ligatures are and why and how they’re used is old news. This zoom class includes samples of manuscript pages from the Dark and Middle Ages where large capital chapter titles couldn’t be squeezed in a single line without abbreviations and ligatures. You’ll also see contemporary applications where ligatures create interest for the reader and fun for us lettering artists! We don’t have to use ligatures…except they’re just too much fun NOT to employ. You’ll receive handouts to print for class so we can work together. Ligatures afford lots of options but which ones are best? I will discuss this while demonstrating so you can see – and take notes – what predicates good choices. Risa’s most notable client is His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
