SUMMARY:November Studio Art Date - November 10\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Need an extra nudge to spend an autumn afternoon creating calligraphy?  Looking for some inspiration from peers doing their work and/or support or solutions for a project underway?  Join our Colorado Calligraphers’ Guild members on Sunday afternoon\, November 10\, 2-4p.m. in the comfort of your own studio or creative corner for a “zoom” gathering. \nGuild V-P Celeste Rossmiller will host a chance to share personal projects\, ask questions of one another\, show practice or finished pages from programs or workshops\, and just enjoy time to have pens/tools in hand and to work “side by side” in the tradition of the medieval scriptoriums. \nNo charge.  We hope this will be the first of similar future gatherings.  This members only event will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:August 14 Program - Connie Furgason
DESCRIPTION:Threads and Whispers Workshop Preview\nwith Connie Furgason\n \nMembers: free\, Non-members: $10\nMembers need not register. Non-members please register below. A zoom link will be sent to current members and program registrants a few days before the program. This program will be recorded for future viewing. Please contact Jenny Allen with questions at ccgprograms@coloradocalligraphers.com \nProgram Description\nThis program is a preview of the upcoming Colorado Calligraphers’ Guild Threads and Whispers Workshop in October. Connie will talk about how we have the opportunity to express the words we choose and add multiple dimensions to that expression. Whether it is abstract or a simple design\, a tiny thread of text can create contrast and visual impact. During her workshop in October\, she will demonstrate how to write in “threads”\, a very loose tiny style of text which can tie elements of a piece together. These threads can be a “whisper” in a piece\, reflecting the theme or be an added design element. \nAbout Connie\nConnie Furgason was raised on a farm in Southern Alberta where her love of nature and the vastness of the prairie is expressed in her work. Her mother was an accomplished artist\, gardener and creative soul. \nShe grew up with the scent of turpentine as her mother painted long into the night after she and her three brothers were asleep. Those influences sent Connie in many artistic directions. She started teaching calligraphy and related arts in 1982. Connie travels across Canada and the US teaching for guilds\, private studios and has been part of the faculty at several international lettering arts conferences. \nConnie loves the written word and uses her own text in her work expressing it through a variety of different mediums including watercolour\, acrylic and mixed media.  Her work has been published by art distribution companies and her originals have found many lovely new homes in Canada and the US. \nShe loves sharing a variety of art techniques with students of all levels and seeing the joy experienced as they discover their own artist within. Connie loves the prairie\, the mountains\, the ocean and especially the gift of her four children and 4 grandchildren.  Currently\, she lives in Lethbridge\, Alberta Canada\, just 45 minutes from the Rocky Mountains\, with her husband Kevin (another creative soul). \n“Find joy daily in the simple offerings….in the splendour of nature\, cherished moments with family and friends and the enchanted pathways waiting to be discovered as art exploration expands our view of what lies at our feet.”  Words by Connie

SUMMARY:April 10 Program - Ligatures: Kissing and Cuddling with Risa Gettler
DESCRIPTION:Ligatures: Kissing and Cuddling\nPresented by Risa Gettler\nWednesday\, April 10\, 2024\n6:30-8pm MDT on Zoom\n  \n\nMembers: free\, Non-members: $10\nMembers need not register. Non-members please register below. A zoom link will be sent to current members and program registrants a few days before the program. This program will be recorded for future viewing. Please contact Jenny Allen with questions at ccgprograms@coloradocalligraphers.com.  \nProgram Description\nStarting with what ligatures are and why and how they’re used is old news. This zoom class includes samples of manuscript pages from the Dark and Middle Ages where large capital chapter titles couldn’t be squeezed in a single line without abbreviations and ligatures. You’ll also see contemporary applications where ligatures create interest for the reader and fun for us lettering artists! We don’t have to use ligatures…except they’re just too much fun NOT to employ. You’ll receive handouts to print for class so we can work together. Ligatures afford lots of options but which ones are best? I will discuss this while demonstrating so you can see – and take notes – what predicates good choices. \nAbout Risa\nRisa Gettler combines her lifelong study of letters with medieval manuscript arts. Extended studies: the University of Calligraphy/Italy\, Barcelona School of Design/Spain\, Princeton University/Department of Spanish Medieval Art\, Getty Center\, and UCLA/Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. A guest on radio and TV. Art projects: the LA City Marathon\, the National Council on Aging\, the International Council on Alzheimer’s Disease/Toronto\, and a CD design of medieval Spanish music funded by The National Endowment of the Arts. Art included in the Smithsonian\, Washington National Cathedral\, calligraphy and calligraphy related books\, calendars\, exhibits\, galleries and international art publications. Teaching for international conferences\, guilds\, universities and museums since the 1990’s. Her work can be found in several anthologies and Risa’s work is represented in the Harrison Collection of Calligraphy and Lettering. Risa’s forthcoming book\, Animating the Alphabet\, is available in 2024. Risa’s most notable client is His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
