Rhythm is the heartbeat of calligraphy. In this demonstration, Sharon will show you how to use ordinary tools to loosen up and practice an informal cursive italic. Because there are fewer pen lifts, and there is a natural swing from down stroke up the diagonal, italic is perfect for developing rhythm in our writing. Once we get the “beat,” we’ll have fun learning some simple polyrhythms to add individual flair and dynamism to our personal Italic hand.
This program is a preview of the workshop Illuminating the Dark offered by Heather Martinez, Tech Host Architect www.TechHostAcademy.com with Sharon, held on Thursdays, February 3 – 24 from 9am PDT/12pm EDT. For more information and to register, go to: bit.ly/illuminatingthedark22.
Sharon makes art and teaches in Austin, Texas and all over the USA, Canada and Europe. Her passion is combining text and images in a seamless and organic way on large canvases, artist books, paper or sketchbooks. Sharon’s award winning work appears in LAR, the Art and Craft of Handlettering and the Speedball Textbook and has been exhibited in the USA and Canada. As a teacher, Sharon’s aim is to ignite passion for claiming one’s personal creative voice, and to help students get over the fear of the blank page.
